Inspiration for strange places!

The spirals gave me other ideas such as Austin Powers, Dr Evil had a time machine that matched what I had in mind when Alice fell down the rabbit hole. This just ties a few of my ideas together.

I also got inspiration from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the glass elevator, there were colours and explosions it was all very alluring I just instantly thought I could use that!
The tunnel scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was exactly the message I wanted to put across, the clip shows everyone enjoying themselves and having fun in one instant but then can becoming frightened and scared. The colours are bright and the singing is innocent these components can mean different things in certain situations.

Interim Intern

This past weekend I went down to London to have an interview with the Director of a new company called Scarlet Bindi, it is an South Asian Fashion Company and I have been hired as an Interim Intern. I think this would be a great experience for me as I will be learning how the Industry works and I get to be exposed to the asian fashion world. I am very excited to begin my work there I will be helping out on fashion shows and going to exhibitions. Sadly none of the work I will be doing there can be used in this project but I thought it was worth a mention.
I will put a link to the website below.

Stop motion progression

After a few unsuccessful stop motion videos I thought i would give it one more try, just because I really liked it but what I was using it for didn't really flow well.  Instead of focusing purely on one pattern I decided to position them together so they interacted with each other. There was the issue still of how was I going to stick them down but keep them loose so I could move them around. In the end I finally found some paper fasteners they allowed freedom of movement for my shapes. This is a key factor in my stop motions as I want to capture the movement of my shapes together like cogs moving together in one big seamless machine.
I played around with positions and speed of frames per second, of corse none of that comes through in these stills! The first set of photos is my first stop motion with my shapes, it's very small and basic but it worked and lead my onto my other ideas.

This is of of my more recent stop motions, I started off with a small cluster of shapes in the middle and then added more and then took them away again. This is a bit easier to see even in the stills as shapes have appeared then disappeared. It was quite effective and lead me onto other stops motions with the same sort of idea but in different positions.

Cindy Sherman

I like Cindy's work because it shows a raw and true side to the fairground, her images are beautiful, simple and ever so slightly sinister. But one the other hand she does have some very creepy and colourful images of clowns looking sinister or sad. She takes a spin on how a clown is supposed to be viewed and how most people view them. Scary, sinister and eery.
I can see similarities between Ciny's work and my work, its very inspiring and I cannot wait to get on with my exploration of this concept.  Clowns wearing mask and hidden identity or the simple ness of a circus/ fairground the structure lying just below the surface.

Optical Illusion stop motions

Now that I am interested in Optical Illusions and stop motions I thought I would give it ago and see how and if I could master them.
I started off by creating some patterns. I made a variety of different patterns cut them out and started to arrange them around on the page but I wanted them to move and I couldn't figure out how I would make them move but also stick them down so they would stay in one place.
I did a few basic stop motions just trying my move individual patterns, they were ok not very fluid or interesting but you have to start somewhere!
I will upload a few stills from those stop motions.

Bird cage

This post links way back to our Belle Vue talk as when I was on holiday there was this remarkably big cage in the reception of my hotel, curiosity got the better of me and I walked over to have a look at what they were keeping inside it. To my surprise all that were in the cage were two tiny little birds, they were beautiful and colourful but I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed. I mean you see a cage this size you expect something exotic right?
This is why I am linking it back to Belle Vue they had Polar bears in cages much smaller than this cage with just a little pool. Where as these two tiny birds get a excessively huge cage. I guess I found it ironic. I took a few photos they can be found below.

Optical Illusion App

This Easter I was looking through my app store and saw this app for optical illusions, seeing as this directly links to my project as I am interested in optical illusions I downloaded it.
It seemed pretty cool very geometric, clean, simple.
As I progressed through the levels I became pretty into the game as it was very simple but I began to really like the presentation of each level each one became more intricate and unexpected than the one before it.
I would look at one level and it would be completely impossible but then i would rotate stand the perspective would change then paths would link up and the impossible became possible. It was incredible a optical illusion! I really like the creativity of each and every level the colours and layouts were also very fresh and new.

Idea fusion

I have gone off the little girl idea. I initially thought it would be a great idea to try and make the audience feel uncomfortable in a sense that I would take pictures of a child in environments that you wouldn't normally feel comfortable them be in. I had idea of then slowly slotting in a few of a little girl in a fairground. The difference between it being this fun safe environment and then taking it all away. So the people the music the lights, all that goes and so does the comfortable feeling that this child will be safe.
I always imagined just a silhouette so just a hint of a child or maybe not even a child just a hint of a child like a child's shoe or a toy.
I really liked the whole Alice in Wonderland idea, a little girl falls down a dark rabbit hole and wakes up in a world full of wonder, imagination and adventure. This is how children view fairgrounds
I tried to bring my two ideas together, I always imagined that when alice fell down the hole it was like a big black spiral and she traveled to an incredible land through time and space. That lead me to try and incorporate my two different interesting into image. This can be found below.

Uptown Girls and my inspiration

I really like this clip from a 2003 film called Uptown Girls, it really embodies what I wanted to convey. A little girl left alone in a fairground, the uneasiness and sadness that accompanies this image. The movie has a story line of its own but this is the kind of message that i would want to come across, what makes it ok to have a child alone in the fairground in the day time to the night time? The night shows up the glow of the lights the music gets turned up if anything it should be more of a mirage and illusion, shouldn't it?
I want to get footage or a stop motion of a young girl just a silhouette in different environments at different times see which feel good which feel bad. If any can convey a lonely isolated feeling or a happy and safe vibe. I think it would be nice to film something from the point of view of a child, like when they get to a fairground they are so excited and can't wait to get on all the rides would be fun then to maybe take away all the lights, music and smells and see if  they still have the same reaction to the fairground.
The clip is relevant for 0.00 - 1.13 anything past that isn't really relevant but its a good film if you want to watch it :)

Image comparisons

I am really interested in the difference that light colour and sound can have on an environment. I want to looking into what makes a place feel comfortable and safe compared to what makes a place eery creepy and isolated.
I found this reel of images on Twitter there are 16 images of abandoned fairgrounds and they are really great images. I love how they are all quite eery and creepy. Some are beautiful some are ironic but none of them are happy or places you would let your children spend time alone in. Their sole purpose of entertaining children and families has completely been reversed. My favourite image is this one below, the link to the images is below.
I really want to bring the isolation and stillness I can see in these images across to my images I think they are really powerful and interesting images.
My Pleasure Beach photos would look great if i could convey this degree of abandonment.
