Week 20

Week 20
14th December – 18th December

This week I tried a different drawing style again. I used wallpaper and food colouring to draw in. The colours came out nice and bright and I drew them in hair. I then left the hair with the drawings as I like the idea of a portrait being a visual representation of a person and the hair is the physical manifestation of the person so there is always a part of them with their drawing. This is a new idea I have started to develop.

Week 19

Week 19
7th of December – 11 December

This week I was pretty stuck, as after my characters ideas faded I didn’t know what to do. I decided that I would just start to draw people in thread and ink as it was quick and I liked the marks I could get with the thread it was loose and I had less control over the drawing. I then decided that if I liked the marks made by thread that hair would be even better to draw with. The hair was a difficult material to use as it would knot up relatively quickly but it was also very successful an sot would create very fine scratchy marks which I liked in my drawings. I drew myself and three others this week and they were all successful. I used Quink so I could go back into the drawings with bleach and edit the its I didn’t like. Looking back on the drawings I’m happy I did them as I’m producing work again and feel a little more productive. I have also stumbled upon a artist called Jasper Hills, he uses colour in his painting and it reminded me of my Harry Potter reference. It made me think that I should try and manipulate a drawing myself as in Harry Potter the Pensive is where the ink like memories are kept and I wanted to duplicate the effects so I thread was soaked in the water and then moved around to create shapes I could then use. I also put the ink soaked hair in the water and watched the ink disperse through out the water. I liked this effect I could develop this process into a stop motion animation.

Week 18

Week 18
30th November – 4th December

I have been refining my hair drawings this week picking out characters and faces from the hair drawings and giving them either light personas or dark ones. It is all about how colour can tell us a narrative. Light bright colours are good and innocent and dark colours are normally associated with the bad characters. I have a range of these characters and I have layered some on top of each other and created more complex characters. It is very enjoyable and I could definitely see these being developed and used in prints and even animations. I have a colour palette that I chose from the colour drawing I did weeks ago of my face. I wanted to tie it in and the colours have all worked well together. After my tutorial I have been directed to not peruse the characters any more as they are becoming their own characters and it’s all about identity so I have found a reference in Harry Potter. The way that the death eater’s travel in these shapeless smoke smudges are very visual again dark is evil and the Order of the Phoenix travel in bright white. That is how my characters should be like my initial drawings where. Just enough to give it a shape a form but not too much keep them loose and free.

Week 16-17

Week 16 – 17
16th November – 27th November
Over the last two weeks I have been developing new methods of drawing, at first I started experimenting with wire as I would really like to do some sculptures and manipulate the metal. I started to draw some of the hair drawings in wire and even a square for the grid of faces.
I did however find inspiration in a unexpected place as I keep seeing faces in unfamiliar places. I have started drawing shapes and faces in hair as I keep seeing them in the shower and they come out really nice. I have since developed some of the pictures into drawings.  I have used a range of different mediums just to experiment with them all, I have used pens, ink, bleach and brusho paints as they have really bright colours. The drawing I developed can either be ethereal or sinister and I like that it has a character to it. I am thinking of developing all of my hair drawings into characters as that’s how I visualize them.

I have been researching it and it’s called Pareidolia, seeing face is unusual places, where your mind sees familiar patterns and determines them where there actually are none.

Week 15

Week 15
9th November – 13th November

This week I have been further developing my faceless faces but now I have been going back into them and thickening out the lines and giving them numbers linking this idea up to the beginning of the project when I was trying to give the girls in my studio a number like myself. If you take away the surrounding information then the narrative changes and these girls could be anyone. They could be prisoners, students, patients or lottery winners. All you have is a face and a number, which is why I wanted to give the faceless drawings numbers as it doesn’t matter who they are they are just people but once I gave them faces and expressions in different colours they completely change as they have expressions and more of a personality. I wanted to distort them further so I used a Kaleidoscope so segment the drawings, as I like the effect it gives. I have also been experimenting with layering images up to achieve a repeat pattern, I have done this on tracing paper so thy can be moved and manipulated.
